
As we know The Berlin Marathon is one of the biggest and most popular running races in the world participated by more than 40,000 road racers in the recent years. This leading sporting event is traditionally held on the last weekend of September where the mild autumn temperature of 15-20 degrees makes the running race great for the marathoners.
Everyone one remembers the winners, some remember the medal places but here we look in detail at all 10 of the fastest finishers in the men’s race. This is the list of the 10 greatest winners of the recently concluded Berlin Marathon Race of 2010.
1. Makau, Patrick (KEN)
Twenty five-year old Patrick Makau Musyoki of Kenya has won the top prize at the 37th Berlin Marathon of 2010 in Germany under challenging conditions when he finished in 2:05:08 despite a bad weather throughout the entire race. He failed to break the world record of Ethiopian Haile Gebrselassie when heavy rain and fog ruined his chances. His time was the 11th fastest in the running history. He became the 2nd man to run 2 marathons under 4 hours and 10 minutes in a year.
2. Mutai, Geoffrey (KEN)
Geoffrey Mutai bagged the 2nd place in the 2010 Berlin Marathon at 02:05:10 running time with just 2 seconds behind first placer Patrick Makau. Mutai, who was born on October 7, 1981 in Kenya specialises in road running competitions and has become a 2-time winner of the Eindhoven Marathon.
3. Worku, Bazu (ETH)
Worku, 20 emerged as the 3rd placer in the 2010 Berlin Marathon’s 42.195 km. race with less than 30 seconds behind the two Kenyan winners garnering 02:05:25 running time. He has won the Kenyan Cross-Country Champs on Feb. 26 this year which was held in Uhuru Gardens in Nairobi.
4. Tsegay, Yemane (ETH)
He is another Ethiopian long-distance runner who finished 4th in the recent Berlin Marathon race with a running speed of 2:07:52 in wet conditions. Born on 8 April 1985, 25 year-old Yemane Tsegay started competing in international races in 2008 and won the 3rd place at the Casablanca Marathon that year. He earned his first victory in winning the Macau Marathon at the end of the year, December 2008.
5. Kiptanui, Eliud (KEN)
Kenyan Eliud Kiptanui was born and raised in Uasin Gishu District on 6 June 1989. At 20, he won 5th place in the 2010 Berlin Marathon with a running time of 02:08:05. In May 2010, he made one of the most remarkable international marathon debuts in history at Prague, when he came into the race with only a 2:12 winning at a local marathon in his Kenya home country. In the later stages of the race, he was running very fast as he went on to bag the 17th fastest time in history.
6. Kipyego, Bernard (KEN)
Bernard Kipyego, another Kenyan long-distance runner born on 16 July 1986 in Keiyo District bagged the 6th position in the recent Berlin Marathon. He had his marathon debut at the 2010 Rotterdam Marathon finishing 5th place, and his winning a runner-up in the Lille Half Marathon in September served as his preparation for the Berlin Marathon where he achieved a running time of 2:08:50. He also competed in the 2009 World Championships finishing 5th place in the10,000 metre-race.
7. Abraham, Tadese (ERI)
Tadese Abraham of Eritrea has been making a name in the marathon competitions. Finishing 7th in the latest Berlin Marathon of 2010 with 02:09:24 running speed, Abraham first grabbed attention for finishing the Berlin Half Marathon in 2008. The 2009 7th Annual Zurich Marathon was a winning debut for Abraham who won the first place over last year’s winner Oleg Kulkov of Russia.
8. Yegon, Gilbert (KEN)
Twenty-two year old Kenyan long-distance runner began taking part in marathon races in 2008 emerged as the 8th placer in the Berlin Marathon Race of 2010 with a running time of 02:10:34. He ran at the Nairobi Half Marathon in 2008 for a 3rd place and joined the Berlin Half Marathon the following year. He scored his first major victory when he stepped up for his marathon debut at the Amsterdam Marathon in 2009.
9. Fujiwara, Masakazu (JPN)
Born on 6 March 1981, 30-year old Japanese long-distance runner trains at Honda Sports Team. Finishing 9th place with 02:12:00 running time, this great marathoner also won the 2010 Tokyo Marathon in February. He competed four times in the Hakona Ekiden race and won the Beijing’s half marathon in 2001. He represented Japan at the World Championships in Athletics’ 2003 marathon but was not able to compete due to a knee injury.
10. Bat-Ochir, Ser-Od (MGL)
Born on July 10, 1981 in Mongolia, 20 year old marathoner Bat-Ochir joined the 2008 Beijing Half Marathon and the 10,000 metre-race in Guangzhou, China in 2009. Recently he won the 10th place in the 2010 Berlin Marathon at a speed of 02:12:42.
